Message from the State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to the 32nd Anniversary Ceremony of the Martyrdom of Ko Phone Maw and Ko Soe Naing at the Yangon Institute of Technology on March 13, 1988 (March 13, 2020)

Historical events of national and global significance are invariably associated with pivotal figures who played instrumental roles. Similarly, the 88 Uprising, a critical juncture in Myanmar's pursuit of democracy, is inextricably linked to Ko Phone Maw and Ko Soe Naing, then students at the Yangon Institute of Technology.
It is my conviction that the most fitting tribute to the memory of the deceased lies in the realization of their aspirations. To appropriately honor Ko Phone Maw and Ko Soe Naing, efforts should be directed towards establishing a truly democratic nation that inspires collective satisfaction and pride. I am therefore greatly heartened by the active engagement of current Yangon Technological University students in fostering the development and harmony of their institution. I believe that through these endeavors, they are commemorating the sacrifices of Ko Phone Maw and Ko Soe Naing not only on this day, March 13th, but on a continuous basis.
The present transition towards democracy is a direct result of the sacrifices and dedication of numerous individuals, both celebrated and unsung, who championed the cause of freedom. To forge a robust democracy and construct a democratic federal union, it is imperative that we, in concert with the citizenry, persevere in overcoming the challenges, hardships, and impediments that lie ahead, drawing upon our collective strength.
In deference to the sacrifices made along the arduous path to democracy, and to ensure that their contributions are not rendered futile, I implore you to continue striving for the consolidation of democratic principles and the establishment of a democratic federal union with unwavering resolve and relentless dedication. With this encouragement, I respectfully submit this message.
Aung San Suu Kyi
State Counsellor
